What changed

Daniil Medvedev was defaulted from his China Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic after swiping an airborne ball into a front-row spectator’s face.

The incident came with Djokovic leading 7-5 5-3. The spectator was helped from the arena holding his face and eye. Medvedev lost the points and prize money he had earned, while Djokovic advanced to Tuesday’s final against Alex de Minaur.

Why it matters

This was not a routine code violation. Medvedev’s action followed a moment of frustration, but the ball struck someone in the stands, and the offence was serious enough to end the match immediately.

That makes the consequence unusually stark: Medvedev was close to returning to the world’s top five, yet an instant later the result, points and prize money were gone. Djokovic, who knows the feeling of being defaulted from a major match, said he felt sorry for both Medvedev and the spectator.

The incident also puts Medvedev’s long-running battle with his temper back in view. He has previously been fined for his behaviour at the US Open and after destroying a racquet in Monte Carlo. He has said he is trying to turn the adrenaline that drives his tennis into something more controlled.

The spectator’s injury outcome is still unclear. For now, the clearest sporting fact is that one frustrated swipe transformed an excellent semi-final into a default and sent Djokovic into another China Open final.
