What changed

England beat Greece 3-1 in Crete on Friday to take a two-goal lead into the second leg of their Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off.

Maya Le Tissier scored her first England goal on her 15th cap, while Erica Meg Parkinson and Grace Fisk made their international debuts. England now face Greece in Leicester on Tuesday at 19:30 BST, with the winner of the tie meeting Ukraine or Slovakia in round two.

Why it matters

The result gives England room to breathe, but not permission to relax. Greece scored after England made defensive errors and also hit the crossbar, leaving Sarina Wiegman frustrated that her team failed to keep a clean sheet.

That matters because England have won only three of their past eight competitive away matches. The scoreline suggests control; the performance offered a warning. England were sometimes sharp, sometimes sloppy, and the second leg will show whether the lapses were a one-off or a habit that could make qualification harder than it needs to be.

Le Tissier’s performance was the night’s clearest positive beyond the result. With Lucy Bronze absent through a minor injury, the Manchester United captain started at right-back, the position Wiegman prefers for her, and took the opportunity with a goal. It is too early to call her Bronze’s regular replacement, but England now have a fresh option pressing for serious consideration.

Parkinson’s debut pointed further forward. The 18-year-old has moved quickly into the senior setup and joined North Carolina Courage this summer after playing for Valadares Gaia. Fisk, meanwhile, finally made her England debut after first receiving a call-up in 2020.

England finished runners-up in their qualifying group, so this play-off was already an avoidable extra hurdle. They have cleared the first step convincingly enough. They still have to finish the job in Leicester.
