What changed

Manchester City were found guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. The independent commission found “sham contracts” and more than £830m in disguised funding; City has repeatedly denied guilt and has until Friday to appeal.

Why it matters

This is no longer only a dispute between a club and the league. The Football Association says the verdict has “significant implications” for football’s integrity and is considering whether to act.

That matters because the alleged scheme goes to the heart of how clubs present their finances and sponsorships. If the verdict stands, the consequences will reach beyond Manchester City’s own record: the credibility of the Premier League’s rules, and the bodies responsible for enforcing them, will be under sharper scrutiny.

The immediate outlook remains unsettled. City may argue on appeal that key sponsorship deals were funded by the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club’s owners, while the FA and Premier League decide what action, if any, follows.
