What changed

LeBron James lost 114-108 to the Brooklyn Nets in his first pre-season game for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 41-year-old scored 10 points, with four rebounds, five assists and a steal in 18 first-half minutes. He played alongside Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, who led Philadelphia with 18 points.

Why it matters

This was a first look at a Philadelphia team trying to fit a new piece into a crowded group. James said the players are still working out how to put one another in the best positions and that it will take time to gel.

That matters because James is entering his 24th NBA season and says this could be his final contract. He has won an NBA title with every team he has played for, but Philadelphia is still chasing its first championship in 43 years.

The defeat offers no reliable verdict on the regular season. It does show the starting point: James has joined a team with major ambitions, and the work of making its biggest names complement one another has begun.
