What changed
The NFL suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one after separate incidents involving players on Sunday.
Seeman appeared to direct profanity at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a 36-24 loss to the New York Giants. Hill shouted at Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson after being pushed into him during Minnesota’s 15-10 win over the Miami Dolphins.
Why it matters
Officials are supposed to control the temperature of a game. Here, the league decided two of them had crossed the line themselves.
Seeman’s incident came after McBride complained about a possible pass-interference call involving Giants cornerback Dru Phillips. Hill’s exchange followed a dead-ball whistle and physical contact involving Wilson. The circumstances differ, but the message from the NFL is the same: frustration does not give officials permission to turn player contact into personal confrontation.
The suspensions also put the players’ reactions in sharper focus. McBride said little beyond acknowledging the difficulty of the moment, while Wilson later apologised to Hill and said the official understood what had happened. That may have cooled both incidents, but the discipline makes clear that the league still treats professional conduct as the official’s responsibility.
The report does not say whether further discipline or changes to officiating policy will follow. For now, Seeman will miss two games and Hill one.
