What changed
Northern Ireland lost 4-0 to Portugal in the first leg of their 2027 Women’s World Cup play-off semi-final at Inver Park. Michael McArdle said the qualification tie had shifted from “improbable to impossible” before Tuesday’s return leg in Portimao.
Portugal led 3-0 at half-time through a Telma Encarnacao penalty, Jessica Silva’s finish and Rebecca Holloway’s own goal. Fatima Pinto added a fourth after Portugal’s Catarina Amado was sent off, while Northern Ireland’s Cora Chambers was dismissed in added time.
Why it matters
Northern Ireland now need to overturn a four-goal deficit away from home, without Chambers. That is the immediate football problem, and it leaves very little room for anything other than an extraordinary comeback.
The defeat also came with a longer-term calculation. With Simone Magill, Laura Rafferty and Nadene Caldwell among the experienced players missing, McArdle gave Jane McMaster her debut and handed first caps to Kess Elmore and 16-year-old Charlotte Havern.
That may be small comfort after a heavy loss, but it gives Northern Ireland’s younger players exposure in a high-pressure tie. McArdle’s view is that the pain of this result can still feed a more sustainable qualification push later.
