What changed

Northern Ireland beat Ukraine 3-0 in the Nations League, moving top of League B2 with seven points from three matches. Ciaron Brown scored twice, Isaac Price added another, and Northern Ireland’s starting team, averaging 22, was its youngest recorded since World War Two.

Why it matters

This looks like more than one excellent night. Brown, 28, has grown into a senior role despite playing in League One, while 21-year-old Ruairi McConville and 20-year-old Tom Atcheson helped lead a defence that kept its third straight clean sheet.

Michael O’Neill’s young side now sits three points clear of Hungary and Ukraine. Kieran Morrison, 19, made his first start and helped create Price’s goal, while Brodie Spencer and Terry Devlin also impressed.

The next test comes against Georgia at Windsor Park. Northern Ireland has built real momentum, but whether these young defenders can sustain this level remains to be seen.
