What changed

Ramon Vega says he will stand in next year’s Fifa presidential election, becoming the first confirmed challenger to Gianni Infantino.

The former Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and Watford defender, now 55, says he wants to reunite football’s “global family,” reform Fifa’s governance and restore trust. Vega previously considered a run in 2015 and declared against Infantino in 2019, but did not secure the backing of five member federations required to enter the ballot.

Why it matters

This turns a leadership crisis into an election contest. Infantino says he remains committed to leading Fifa, even as Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation have called for him to quit after the failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors triggered a backlash across football.

Vega’s challenge gives those calls a named alternative, but not yet a viable one. He still needs five federation endorsements to make the ballot, and it is unclear whether he can win them or whether other candidates will enter the race.

His message is aimed at the people who live with football’s decisions rather than make them: players, coaches, referees, supporters, clubs and communities. Whether that message can overcome the machinery of international football will be the first test of his campaign.
