What changed

Rayo Vallecano’s La Liga match against Athletic Club was abandoned at 0-0 after Rayo supporters twice threw paper planes and rubber balls onto the pitch.

The protest began in the 13th minute, during the chant calling for owner and president Raul Martin Presa to leave. Play resumed after 15 minutes, but objects were thrown again and the referee stopped the match for good.

Why it matters

This was Rayo’s first home match of the season after the Estadio de Vallecas had been temporarily closed over serious health and safety concerns, including a risk of Legionnaires’ disease. The protest therefore landed on the same ground where supporters already felt the club’s basic standards had been allowed to slide.

Rayo’s players described the pitch as “unplayable” last season and pointed to a lack of hot water, poor cleaning and mould at the training ground. Supporters also face long queues at the stadium’s small ticket office because Rayo remains the only top-flight Spanish club without a ticketing website.

The football itself has been interrupted at a difficult moment. Rayo are 13th in La Liga, with two wins from seven matches, after reaching last season’s Conference League final before losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace.

Athletic Club said it would contact travelling supporters to arrange refunds. The fixture’s new date and any disciplinary sanction have not been reported.
