What changed
Wakefield Trinity beat Warrington Wolves 23-10 at Old Trafford on October 3 to win the Super League title for the first time.
It was Wakefield’s first Grand Final appearance, and it made them only the sixth club to become Super League champions. Tom Johnstone received the Rob Burrow Award.
Why it matters
Wakefield’s climb is unusually steep. They were relegated in 2023, returned to Super League in 2025, reached the final at their first attempt and finished the job immediately.
The match was largely decided before half-time. Wakefield led 19-0, built on tries from Cameron Scott, Isaiah Vagana and Jazz Tevaga, plus accurate kicking from Max Jowitt and a late drop goal by Jack Sinfield. Warrington briefly threatened after Corey Hall was sin-binned, with Arron Lindop scoring twice, but Johnstone’s try kept Wakefield clear.
My read: this is more than a surprise result. Wakefield have changed their place in the competition’s history in one night. What the title means for their future recruitment, finances or league performance is still unclear, but the club now has a championship season to build around.
