What changed

Wrexham County Borough Council has approved the club’s £70m rebuild of the Kop stand at the Racecourse. The new stand will add 7,500 seats, taking capacity above 18,000, with dressing rooms, media facilities and hospitality areas, and is scheduled to be fully operational for the 2027-28 season.

Why it matters

This is the infrastructure catching up with Wrexham’s football. Three successive promotions have taken the club from non-league football to the Championship, but the stadium still carried the physical reminders of a much darker period: the old Kop had stood derelict and unused for years.

The rebuild gives Wrexham more than extra seats. It is designed to make the Racecourse suitable for Premier League football if promotion arrives, while also adding the working spaces a modern club needs behind the scenes. That matters because the club’s rise has repeatedly moved faster than the rest of its operation.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have backed the push towards the top flight, but the project also reflects a wider change around the club. Aidan Miller, Wrexham’s chief strategy officer, said the optimism generated by the owners and the team is visible beyond the stadium and across the city.

Wrexham finished seventh in the 2025-26 Championship table, so the Premier League remains an ambition rather than a guaranteed next step. If the stand stays on schedule and opens for 2027-28, it will give the club a ground built for the destination it is chasing, whether the team gets there first or has to wait.
