What changed
The Women’s Tennis Association will introduce equal prize money for women and men at all combined WTA 1000 tournaments from 2027. The Italian Open and other major events in the category will join tournaments already offering equal payouts.
Why it matters
This makes equal pay the standard across the WTA 1000 calendar, rather than a policy limited to some events. Women’s tennis players at these tournaments will compete for the same prize-money terms as men from 2027.
The change is a major milestone, but the individual prize amounts and how organisers will fund the new payouts have not been specified.
