What changed

Zheng Qinwen became the first Chinese woman to win the China Open, beating Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in Beijing. The 24-year-old wildcard, ranked 54th before the tournament, saved three set points and claimed her first WTA 1000 title.

Why it matters

This was a comeback win as much as a historic one. Zheng had elbow surgery last year and arrived after a two-year title drought, but held her nerve when Andreeva led 2-0 in both sets and threatened again at 5-4 in the opener.

The reward is immediate: Zheng is set to climb 31 places to number 23, pending Monday’s rankings update. Andreeva, despite losing, is expected to rise to number three.

Zheng’s ace at match point sealed the result, after a late double fault briefly gave the occasion a wobble. Then she celebrated with karaoke in front of a passionate Beijing crowd. The victory is a major marker for Chinese tennis, though whether it becomes sustained form will only be clear in the tournaments ahead.
