What changed
VentureBeat’s Sept. 3 report, presented by Contentful, argues that search tools and AI engines increasingly compose answers directly on screen. That creates an “AI visibility gap”: brands can look healthy in rankings, click-through rates and organic traffic while failing to appear in the answers buyers actually see.
Why This Matters
this is a measurement problem before it is a marketing problem. A strong dashboard can now conceal a weak discovery position if it only records the trip to a website and misses the moment an AI answer names, omits or substitutes a product.
That changes a practical decision: do not treat traditional search metrics as a complete map of demand. They remain useful, but they may no longer show whether a prospective buyer encounters the company at the point where an answer is formed. The report does not establish the gap’s scale or identify particular AI tools, so the risk is uncertain. Still, “we rank well” is becoming a less satisfying answer to “are we being found?”
Impact assessment
Marketing teams are exposed if on-screen AI answers become a meaningful discovery surface. In our view, the near-term task is to separate traffic performance from answer visibility: one measures visits; the other may determine whether a brand was considered at all.
