What changed

Microsoft announced Maia 300, its third-generation in-house AI chip, on October 12, 2026. The company says it is designed to become the primary AI inference system for Microsoft’s products and services, improving the cost and efficiency of cloud AI workloads while handling newer reasoning models and agentic tasks.

Why it matters

This is Microsoft trying to control more of the machinery behind AI responses. If Maia 300 works as intended, Microsoft can run more of its own inference workloads on hardware it designed, instead of relying as heavily on Nvidia GPUs for every request.

That matters because inference is where AI products do their day-to-day work: generating answers, completing tasks and running agents. A chip built for those jobs could give Microsoft more room to tune performance and costs across its cloud services.

The important distinction is that this is not a confirmed replacement for Nvidia’s entire role. No performance, cost, deployment-scale or customer-adoption figures were provided, so the size of any shift away from Nvidia remains unconfirmed.
