Lilly Wachowski Launches Anarchists United to Back Marginalized Filmmakers

Lilly Wachowski has launched Anarchists United Foundation and Anarchists United Studio with film programmer Sarah Marie Flores and producer Lawrence Mattis, aiming to support stories from marginalized communities. The account is based on reporting by Variety.

The initiative will provide grants, fellowships, mentorship through its Directors Prep & Pitch Lab and office space through United Spaces of Anarchy, while also helping finance the studio’s productions.

Its first project is Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF, a DIY docuseries starring the trans Australian comedian as she explores occultism and magic. The series is scheduled to debut on YouTube on Sept. 16.

Wachowski, whose credits with sister Lana include The Matrix series, Bound and Sense8, told Variety that the cancellation and later removal from streaming of Work in Progress helped prompt the venture. She said she had spent years pitching “cool and queer trans stories” without finding a buyer.

For entertainment audiences, the studio represents a career and production decision with a clear focus: creating infrastructure for filmmakers whose work has struggled to find support in the mainstream industry. Wachowski also discussed trans rights, J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk in the interview.
