Netflix has ordered a new series adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove, with Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart set to co-showrun, write and executive produce. This account is based on reporting by Variety.
The series will follow former Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call on a perilous cattle drive from the Rio Grande to Montana. Kazan and Stuart also co-showrun Netflix’s upcoming East of Eden limited series.
Teton Ridge Entertainment, which acquired the rights last year, had said it would begin with McMurtry’s 1985 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel before potentially moving to Streets of Laredo, Dead Man’s Walk and Comanche Moon. Netflix has not announced casting, an episode count, production timing or a release date.
The project revisits material previously adapted as the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning 1989 CBS miniseries starring Robert Duvall, which Variety reports drew 26 million viewers and led to several sequel projects.
Executive producers include Teton Ridge’s Thomas Tull, Jillian Share and Jen Gorton; Jon Jashni; Diana Ossana; and Curtis McMurtry of the McMurtry Estate.
