What changed

African technology startups raised US$582.808 million in the third quarter of 2026, spread across 58 companies. It was the strongest quarter of the year, up 70% from Q3 2025, lifting investment for the first nine months to US$1.39 billion across 137 startups.

The rebound followed a weaker second quarter, when 38 startups raised US$260 million.

Why it matters

The numbers suggest African startup funding is recovering, but the recovery is uneven. Q3 was strong enough to make 2026’s total look likely to match or exceed 2025’s US$1.6 billion, after the sector fell to US$1.12 billion in 2024.

That matters for founders and operators because capital availability is no longer moving in only one direction. A stronger quarter can reopen room for hiring, product development and expansion plans that were harder to finance during the funding downturn.

The longer view is more restrained. Even if the year reaches the projected US$1.85 billion, that would remain well below the US$3.33 billion raised in 2022 and the US$2.4 billion raised in 2023. The full-year figure is still an extrapolation, so the next quarter will determine whether Q3 marks a durable recovery or a sharp rebound inside a still-cautious market.
