What changed
AI agents are being built to shop, book flights and make reservations on a person’s behalf. But websites are blocking or challenging automated access with anti-bot defenses, putting consumers in the middle. A proposed standard now aims to make websites more compatible with these agents.
Why it matters
The promise of an agent is simple: tell it what you want, and let it handle the clicking. That promise breaks down if the website treats the agent like suspicious traffic. The consumer may still have to step in, repeat information or abandon the task entirely.
This is becoming a standards problem, not just a product glitch. Websites need defenses against unwanted automation, while agents need a recognised way to identify themselves and complete legitimate actions. The standard could help resolve that standoff, but its technical design, governance, adoption and effect on security or user consent are still unknown.
