What changed
Apple says macOS will add new controls around Full Disk Access, a permission that can give software broad access to users’ files, messages, mail and browsing history. Apple linked the planned changes to the growing risks posed by increasingly capable AI agents.
Why it matters
Full Disk Access is not a narrow key. It can open several of the most revealing parts of a person’s digital life at once. That makes AI agents different from ordinary utilities: the more work they can perform across apps and files, the more damaging an overly broad permission could become.
Apple’s move suggests macOS permissions will need to account not only for what software can access, but for what autonomous software might do with that access. Informed speculation points toward tighter boundaries around powerful agents, although Apple has not yet specified the controls, rollout timing, affected macOS versions or enforcement model.
