What changed
MENA startups raised $1.1 billion across 73 deals in September, a 193% jump from August but 68% below September 2025. Saudi Arabia drove the rebound: 40 startups raised $947.2 million, with Barq, Tabby and Lendo alone accounting for $762.5 million.
- Barq raised $329.5 million in Series A funding.
- Tabby raised $233 million in Series F funding.
- Lendo secured $200 million in debt financing.
Fintech supplied about 85% of all MENA funding. Egypt returned to the top three with $49.2 million across seven deals, including Paymob’s $35 million pre-Series C round.
Why it matters
The headline recovery is real, but it is narrow. Three Saudi fintech transactions generated nearly 70% of September’s capital, so the region’s funding market did not suddenly become broad and deep. It produced a very large month around a very small group of deals.
The financing mix did shift. Debt represented 31.7% of September funding, down from 76% a year earlier, meaning equity made a much larger contribution to the total. Early-stage companies led by both volume and value, raising $418.2 million across 39 deals.
Saudi Arabia’s dominance was especially concentrated in fintech, which generated 86% of the funding raised by Saudi companies. The UAE placed second with $98.4 million across 12 deals, while Egypt’s $49.2 million total depended heavily on Paymob.
That concentration matters for anyone building, buying or funding technology in the region. A strong aggregate number can conceal a tougher environment for companies outside the favored sector, country or funding stage. September lifted third-quarter funding above $1.7 billion, but the fourth quarter will show whether capital spreads beyond Saudi Arabia, fintech and a few unusually large transactions.
Elsewhere, Saudi AI startup Echelon raised an undisclosed round from East40, RAED Ventures, Avra, Ben Horowitz and other investors. It plans to use the money for AI deployments across Saudi enterprises and government entities, launch its Frontier engineering unit and open an applied AI training institute in the fourth quarter. Echelon Defense Industries is scheduled for early 2027.
Beltone Asset Management and Amtaar Capital also announced a real estate investment fund targeting 2 billion Egyptian pounds, or $38 million, in total issuances. Its first issuance is expected to range from 500 million to 700 million pounds. Beltone will manage the vehicle and select its assets, while Amtaar will give investors digital access.
