Sony brings AI graphics upscaling to the regular PS5

What changed

Sony is bringing Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling technology, to the regular PlayStation 5. Sony says QSSR is a new performance tier developed through Project Amethyst, its work with AMD.

Why it matters

The important detail is where QSSR is going: the existing PS5, not a newly announced console. That gives Sony a way to improve how games are rendered on hardware already in homes, potentially making sharper images less dependent on raw graphics power.

For developers and technology buyers, the move also shows Sony treating AI upscaling as part of the console’s performance strategy rather than a feature reserved for premium hardware. But the practical value remains unproven: the release timing, supported games, image-quality gains and performance requirements have not been specified, and it is not yet clear whether QSSR will materially narrow the visual gap with higher-end hardware.
