What changed
Tesla sold fewer vehicles in the third quarter than it did a year earlier, when U.S. buyers rushed to use expiring federal electric-vehicle tax credits. The company’s third-quarter delivery and production report, released October 2, puts a dent in its recovery story.
Why it matters
The year-ago comparison had an unusual boost: buyers were pulling purchases forward before the credits expired. That makes this quarter’s decline harder to read as a clean measure of Tesla’s underlying demand, but it still leaves the company with less momentum than it had hoped to show.
The informed guess is that the tax-credit timing explains at least part of the drop. If so, the next quarterly report will matter more: Tesla will need to show whether sales stabilize once that temporary rush is out of the comparison.
